This Hair Tie Trick Made My Ponytail Look Fuller—No Pins or Fuss Required
Takes less than five minutes and makes your ponytail look 10x better—here’s how
We’ve all been there: trying to achieve that perfect ponytail, complete with high volume and not a strand of hair out of place. I have even carved out extra time during the getting ready process when I plan on wearing a ponytail because I know how long it’s going to take me to get that desired look. While, sure, I can manage to pull my hair through a hair tie and make it look decent, what I can never seem to get right is hiding the elastic. You know, the trick your hairstylist has done where she wraps a piece of hair around the hair tie to hide it? I’ve never been able to get it to stay put and look right—until I stumbled across this viral hair tie trick.
How to do the viral hair tie trick
If you’re like me, you love scrolling through TikTok for all your outfit and hair inspiration. I’ve found some of my go-to 5-minute hairstyles on the app, as well as product recommendations and styling hacks. I’ve scrolled across too many to count, but this one might take the cake.

A short video by @mattloveshair has gained 1.9 million likes—and I like to think the reason why it’s garnered so much attention is that it’s truly ingenious. It’s so simple, yet it managed to blow over a million people’s minds (including mine).
This ponytail trick will perfectly hide your hair elastic and doesn’t even require any bobby pins or clips. Watch the video for a visual and follow the steps below to get the look:
- Brush through your hair and then gather it into a ponytail at your desired height and secure it with an elastic. If you want extra volume and hold, you can prep your hair by spritzing in some texture spray or dry shampoo.
- Next, take a second hair tie and loop it through your original elastic. Take a strand of hair from the bottom of your ponytail and wrap it around and over the second elastic until you have just a tiny tail end, then loop it through that second elastic.
- Pull the second elastic through and out of the first elastic, and do any necessary tweaking. Finish it off with a mist of hairspray for all-day hold.
Before I tried this trick, I was hesitant: I wasn’t positive it would stay all day and I didn’t think I’d be able to get it to look as good as the TikTok. However, it was much simpler than I expected. I was able to nail it after just a little practice and it’s completely changed my ponytail game. Not only will it make your ponytail look 10x better, but it also takes only a minute to do once you get the hang of it!
