The best hairstyles for thinning hair at the temples
When it comes to hair thinning at the temples, it’s key to identify what you want to enhance and what needs to be camouflaged, says Chaz Dean, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Wen Hair & Body Care. “Once you know, you can then switch up your style to tackle spots where the hair is thinning.”
One easy way to do this is by adding bangs. “There are several different types of bangs that can help, from blunt bangs, textured bangs to curtain bangs of different lengths,” adds William Whatley, Creative Education Director for Scruples Haircare, and former hair stylist on Ambush Makeover. “Whether the length ends at the bridge of your nose or the tip of your nose, or your chin, all lengths will give you different flattering effects.” Basically, for the best hairstyles for thinning hair at the temples, ask your stylist for bangs, like one of the styles featured below.
1. Curtain bangs

For thinning hair at the temples on one or both sides, a curtain fringe swept out toward the sides can camouflage areas where hair is not as thick, says Dean. “Curtain bangs act as a literal curtain to help cover those thinning areas,” he explains. “Especially when the center is carved out and open, which helps direct attention away from the temples.”
What to ask for: Request bangs that are longer at the sides than the middle, with soft ends that start in the center of the pupil of your eyes, and end with the longest length hitting just above the cheekbone.
2. Best hairstyles for thinning hair: Face-framing layers

“Going for a face-framing hairstyle can hide any thinning at temples,” says Dean. The reason: soft face-framing layers help make any sparse spots look as if they are an intentional part of the multi-layered style. What’s more, layers add movement and volume to thinning hair, so it looks fuller overall.
What to ask for: Request medium-to-long layers that start at cheekbones and are graduated every few inches to the ends of hair.
3. A pixie with full fringe

A pixie with fringe gives thinning hair maximum volume and movement while concealing any patchiness at temples. “A great way to help conceal thinning at temples is cutting bangs into a full fringe,” says Dean. Doing this creates a lift up top, giving the illusion of fuller hair at temples.
What to ask for: A pixie cut with bangs that are a few inches longer in the front, so they can be brushed forward to cover thinning hair at the temples.
4. Best hairstyles for thinning at the temples: Side swept bangs

To hide temples that are thinning, opt for side-swept bangs, suggests Dean. “When bangs are swept across the forehead to one side it can be transformative,” he continues. “Instead of having just one heavy length that hangs there and looks limp, these bangs can help thin and wispy locks appear thicker.”
What to ask for: Request a chipped feather edge or razor cut, to ensure the ends of bangs are not too blunt, so they look fuller and offer more coverage at the temples.
Speaking of sweeping bangs to the side, Whatley has one parting piece of advice when it comes to heading into the salon and that is to ask to get bangs cut last. “It’s fine to ask your stylist to cut bangs when they’re dry,” he says. “I always cut bangs at the end of any haircut appointment—that way I never get the bangs too short for the client—because dry hair doesn’t shrink like wet hair does.” In doing so, you’re sure to end up with the perfect length—and a hairstyle that looks great when showing off your good side!
