25 Best Wigs For Black Women That Look Real and Are Easy to Install

Our top picks, plus a guide to every type of wig: ready-to-wear, human hair, synthetic, lace, glueless, and more!

To say I was excited searching the best wigs for black women is a total understatement. As someone with (sometimes unruly) curls, I’ve struggled with my hair for years. Dyeing, frying, —you name it, I’ve done it.

Flat irons, relaxers, and even tight ponytails can wreak havoc on natural hair, resulting in hair loss, breakage, and thinning. Wigs are a fun — and trending — way to rehab your locks while still enjoying new styles.

Today’s wigs are much more realistic than the fake-looking ones of the past. Many are made with human hair, coming in different textures, and shapes. They can be customized by you or a stylist, and even the synthetic types offer more variety than they did before.

Although I was initially intimidated by what was available — lace-fronts, frontal closures, glueless — I can now confidently say you don’t have to be scared to try them all.

Ready to wig out? Here are our favorites, plus everything you need to know before you get started.

What kind of wig looks most natural?

When shopping the best wigs for black women you can go the synthetic or human hair route. Synthetic wigs are made from nylon or acrylic, and processed to look like hair strands. Human hair wigs are made from donated unprocessed virgin hair, giving the most natural appearance.

“Synthetic and human wigs vary in many ways, but one of the main ones is longevity,” says Brittany Johnson, licensed hairstylist and senior content manager for Mayvenn. “Synthetics can be worn multiple times, but they generally do not last very long, and cannot be styled and customized as much out of the package…Human hair wigs, if they’re of great quality, can be re-used and re-worn, as well as be customized with more color and styling options.”

A synthetic wig, like the Adeline from Rene of Paris (L.A. Wig Company, $263), can last six months if worn every day. They tend to be lighter, making them good for summer. They’re affected by humidity, so they won’t get frizzy. However, if you crave versatility, human hair wigs, like the Straight Glueless Layer Cut (Nadula $67.17), are the way to go. Like real hair they’re susceptible to poofing, but they can handle heating tools and product. If you take care of them, they can last more than a year.

“[They] need to be shampooed, conditioned, and cared for on a different level because they are made from actual human hair,” explains Johnson. “On the other hand, synthetic wigs can’t always be cleansed and styled the same way, and if they can, each manufacturer’s care instructions are very specific.”

Wearing an ill-fitted wig will make your unit look the opposite of real, so it’s important to find the right size. “Use a flexible tape measure [to find] the circumference all around, as well as the space from ear to ear across the crown of your head,” says Johnson. “Some custom-created units may also require that you measure the area from your front hairline to the back of your nape.”

Refer to the manufacturer’s size chart to find your correct wig size. Johnson also points out that many wig caps include clips and adjustable straps to keep them in place.

What kind of wig is best for beginners?

The world of wigs is fun, but at the beginning I was seriously overwhelmed. Lace-fronts, closures, 360-lace — where to start? Fortunately, there are realistic wigs that don’t require installation fuss.

“One of the best types of wigs for beginners are ready-to-wear wig styles,” Johnson explains. “They have a pre-set style and part, and are usually cut into a specific style and length. The pre-set parting area limits the amount of lace that the user has to work with, [making] it easier to truly grab and go while still getting all of the benefits of the wig-wearing experience.”

Ready-to-wear wigs come in synthetic, and human hair. One of my favorite is Mayvenn’s Notorious Naomi Wig. It has bangs, and adjustable strap within the cap to keep the wig on tight. It’s definitely one of the best wigs for black women who are just getting started.

Best Wigs For Black Women
Mayvenn

Lace wigs, like this Standard Lace Front Brazilian Loose Wave, are popular because they have a more natural look, and be customized to create a realistic hairline. The lace must be trimmed before being worn, and unless the wig is glueless, you’ll have to apply wig glue to keep them from shifting.

Regardless of what type you choose, you should wear a cap beneath the unit to protect your hair. Opt for a color that closely resembles your skin tone to create the illusion of a real scalp beneath the wig’s hair part.

Hair brands like Mayvenn will include a wig cap with your order, but you can also find caps on Amazon. I’m a fan of Dreamlover Wig Caps (Amazon, $5.99). They’re available in different tones, come in a pack of 12, and are anti-slip. You can also wear a wig grip, which is a type of headband that goes beneath the wig, on top the cap. It will further protect your edges if you’re applying glue in the wig installation process.

Types of Best Wigs For Black Women

The hardest thing (in my opinion) about wigs is understanding the different options. To make it easier, here’s a quick comparison of the types of wigs, followed by a glossary of terms that will help you choose the best wig for your needs.

  • Lace-closure wigs: Lace-closure wigs have a smaller parting area, ranging four by four or five by five inches in length. They can be parted in the middle or side, and offer full coverage protective style. They’re good for users who aren’t ready for the lace-frontal installation process.
  • Lace-front wigs: A lace-frontal has a customizable lace hairline that goes ear to ear for a wider parting space. They’re mid to high level maintenance, and are good for those who’d like to do more elaborate hairstyles.
  • HD lace wigs: HD stands for high definition, and refers to Swiss or royal lace. This lace is transparent when applied to the scalp.
  • 360-lace wigs: A wig with lace around the perimeter of the wig’s cap. The can be worn in ponytails or buns without the hair at the nape of the neck being visible.
  • Full-lace wigs: A wig with lace as the base of the wig cap. Individual strands are hand-knotted into the lace. They offer the most styling, and tend to be the most expensive.
  • Glueless wigs: Glueless wigs use an interior band or clips to secure the wig to the wearer. They’re available with different types of lace, and don’t require adhesive. They’re one of the best wigs for black women concerned about their edges.

Other helpful wig terminology:

  • Wig installation: The act of applying the wig to the wearer’s head. Lace wigs must be trimmed to the hairline. Glue or an adhesive can be applied to beneath the hairline to make the wig lay flat. This is not required with ready-to-wear or glueless wigs.
  • Hair plucking: Part of the installation process. Wearers can further tweeze the hairline of the wig to make it appear more natural and less uniform. This should only be done with human hair units.
  • Hair density: A wig’s hair density tells you how much hair is on a unit. Hair density ranges from 60 to 200 percent. The higher the density, the heavier the hair. Human hair is around 120 percent density, so for wearers wanting ultra-thick locks should look for wigs that are 140 percent and up. Lower density wigs are lighter, and better for summer.

Which is better: lace-front or full-lace wigs?

Best Wigs For Black Women
Mayvenn

Lace-frontal wigs and full-lace wigs are great for creating different hairstyles. They have more parting options than lace-closures, and require similar maintenance. If you have some wig experience, they’re both good choices.

In terms of versatility, full-lace wigs offer the most options for users. Because the entire cap is lined with lace, the parting options are endless. They’re also more breathable.

Full-lace wigs tend to be more expensive than other wig types. Prices start around $400 and go up. If you’re watching your coins, full-front wigs are a better pick. One of best lace-front wigs for black women is the Ombre Brown Loose Wave (Luveme Hair, $139.90). It comes in a gorgeous color, has an elastic brand cap and Swiss lace.

Does wearing a wig prevent hair growth?

Short answer, no. In fact, wearing a wig can help your hair become healthier.

“Cons come into wig-wearing when they are not applied properly, or when natural hair care isn’t prioritized,” Johnson says, advocating to ditch the wig at bedtime.

She also warns against not properly installing and removing the wig. “Keeping an eye on how your wig is applied around your hairline is critical. Getting glue or adhesive on your natural hair, and setting your wig without proper removal can cause unnecessary stress or damage.”

Follow the glue removal instructions of your preferred wig glue. If you’re using a gel or a holding spray like Got2B Glued, dabbing the area with water or rubbing alcohol should loosen its grip. Wigs can be stored on a mannequin head, shoebox, or soft bag when not in use.

Mayvenn HD Lace Loose Wave Closure Wig

$210
  • Description
  • Pros

I’m of the belief that all hair is good hair. However, who doesn’t want to look like Beverly Johnson sometimes? As soon as I saw this wig I knew I had to try it — experience schmerience. I’ll leave my review below, but here’s why (when ready) this Loose Wave Closure unit is worth trying. For one thing, it extremely silky, easy to work with, and can be parted in the middle or side. As you probably already know, where you part can completely change the look of your face, so having this option is fantastic. Another thing that makes this one of the best wigs for black women is that it’s protectant and provides full coverage to your actual hair. I don’t know about you, but although I’m not embarrassed to wear a wig, I’m not announcing it either! This unit really looks like it’s growing from your own head, and is thick and lustrous. Available in lengths 16 to 24 inches, you’ll want to sashay like Shante once you put it on.

Editor’s review: My hair is damaged from heat styling, so I’ve been curious about wig wearing to give my hair a rest. I’ve worn synthetics in the past, but I’ve wanted to start wearing lace wigs because they look so natural. The wig arrived in gorgeous packaging, and included a soft bag for storage, a wig grip, and two caps. I was very impressed with how silky the unit was, and even though its density is 150 percent, it’s super light. I watched a ton of wig installation videos on Youtube to get a better idea of techniques. To prep for the wig cap I brushed back my hair, made a single braid, and then pinned it up in a small bun with some bobby pins. I placed the cap on to get a feel for it, and then put holding gel beneath it under my hairline to keep it in place. Once it dried, I cut off the excess pieces, and then brushed foundation around the front and where the wig’s part would land. Cutting the lace was easy. I wanted to be precise, so I used nail trimming scissors, instead of heavy duty ones. The wig cap has adjustable straps similar to a bra hook. Once it was secured, I brushed it out, smoothing the top with the back of my flat iron. This is a good way to get the wig to lay flat if you don’t have a hot comb. I did have some trouble accentuating the part, but I’m not very skilled at doing my own hair, and probably wasn’t using the best styling tools.

I mindlessly play with my own hair all the time, so I was relieved I could do the same without the unit moving. It also doesn’t tangle. Everyone who saw me in it thought it was my real hair. The front is dense, so I plan to tweeze it more, but it really is gorgeous. I’m excited to use this while I take a break from my blowdryer. If I could do it again, I would cut the lace in increments, just to ensure I wasn’t snipping too much off. I would have also tried the lace melt method to get a more realistic hairline. Overall, I’m pleased and don’t expect this to be my last wig from Mayvenn!

Rene of Paris Synthetic Adeline Wig

$263
  • Description
  • Pros

This short bob is full of sass. If you’ve always wondered what you’d look like with a shorter cut, this if your chance. Not quite a pixie, this wavy number is a fun take on the classic bob. It’s synthetic, making it a great option if you’re new to the wig game or not big on hair styling. Sweetly named Adeline, we think this hairpiece is kind of sexy with its tousled texture. However, even if you don’t have a hot date lined up, this is still appropriate enough for work, appointments, and everywhere else. We like Adeline in marble brown (shown above), but she’s also available in 20 other colors, including smokey gray, and silver stone.

Luveme Body Wave Glueless Lace Wig

$120
  • Description
  • Pros

Long, beachy waves are one of those hair trends I never could get without visiting a salon. Although the look’s allure is its effortless vibe, it takes a lot of time blowdrying and curling to fix it just right. This Body Wave Glueless Wig makes it so much easier. The lace-closure already comes lightly plucked, so just trim the lace, and secure to your head with the interior band. According to one reviewer, the unit can “hold curl without any product,” which also means you won’t have to wash it often. The model above is wearing the wig in 22 inches, but lengths begin at 10 if you’d like something shoulder length. The hair is thick (180 percent density), which means it may feel a bit heavier than you expect. However, it also gives lots of healthy looking volume.

Promising review: “This is my first time ordering long hair and this wig was the perfect starter. I’ve gotten so many compliments already, and I’ve only cut the lace and added a little foundation [to the scalp]. Definitely my new favorite!

Notorious Naomi Wig

  • Description
  • Pros

Who doesn’t like bangs? They’re flirty, fun, and a great way to disguise frown lines! I’m kidding — sort of, but I seriously love the Notorious Naomi Wig from Mayvenn. It’s reminiscent of the goddess Naomi Campbell signature do. Although it’s 20 inches, don’t be intimidated with the installation process. The cap is adjustable, and has clips to secure without glue. You’ll love how shiny and soft the hair is — and all without a flat iron. The world will be your runway once you put it on, and if the Papparazzi are around, you’ll be ready. I’d wear it on days I needed a boost of confidence — like at a meeting, but it would also would make a sultry come-hither look for date night.

Promising review: “This hair is of nice soft quality with soft lace. I really like that it’s not too thick but “thick enough” for warmer weather.”

Rene of Paris Tyler Synthetic Wig

$130
  • Description
  • Pros

I love a pixie cut. It’s cute, fierce, and highlights the cheekbones. Sadly, I’ve never been bold enough to make such a drastic cut. If you also haircut-phobic, then you’ll like this synthetic. I like to think of the Tyler Wig as a non-comital alternative to the big chop. The hair is wefted together, making pieces fall in different directions the way our real hair does. This makes the unit look so realistic that others will think you visited a stylist. It comes in lots of color options, most with highlights to add depth. There’s no lace to deal with, making installation less than five minutes. If you’ve wanted to rock this look the way Angela Basset, Halle Berry or Viola Davis have in the past, this is your chance!

Trendy Tammi Deep Wave Center Part Lace Wig

$185

  • Pros

If curls like Gloria Ruben’s excite you, you’ll like Trendy Tammi. The deep wave center part lace wig is a great starter unit for those craving thick ringlets. It doesn’t require any major installation, and includes an adjustable strap and clips. Simply trim the lace, adjust the piece, and enjoy. The part’s lace makes your scalp undetectable, but you can always add a little concealer or foundation for extra coverage. I see this wig being worn every day, but also with a few small braids for a more fun, boho look. Its length is 15 inches, and it’s available in natural black, jet black, and chocolate brown.

Promising review: “Absolutely love my ready-to-wear wig! It’s hassle free, doesn’t have to be glued down, plucked, bleached or anything. Just cut the lace and go! Density is perfect, and shedding is minimal!”

Rene of Paris Cheyenne Synthetic Wig

$286
  • Description
  • Pros

An A-line bob is very 60s-chic, and reminds me of when Diana Ross had the famous ‘do. Hers was done by Vidal Sassoon, and was more bouffant. I prefer this sleeker, more current style. You’ll look instantly sophisticated, even if at the grocery or walking the family dog. The Cheyenne Synthetic Wig features a lace part to easily blend into your natural scalp, and comes in lots of different hues with lowlights for dimension. You’ll have to trim the lace-front style, but once you do that you’ll never need to do it again. This doesn’t have the styling option like with a human hair wig, but truthfully, most people don’t go for a shorter cut to spend hours in front of the mirror.

Nadula Human Hair Afro Wig

$165

Channel your inner Tracee Ellis Ross with this 16 inch human hair unit. The tight coils are stunning, and already styled to perfection. The ultra-thick wig’s deep part can be centered or picked to make an afro, and according to the folks at Nadula, a cap is unnecessary with this ready-to-wear piece. Although we think it wouldn’t hurt — just so your own hair is safely tucked away — you do you. The wig has an elastic band to keep it snuggly against your head, but you can always add a few bobby pins for extra security. Whether you rock this with a suit or go for a more bohemian look, you’re sure to turn heads. Best of all, this wig has fully transparent lace. If you need to fluff your curls in public, no one will question if it’s yours!

As someone who has slowly learned to love her curls, I’m happy to know other ladies are doing the same. This isn’t to say that’s I don’t understand how time consuming they can be. That’s why I love the Pineapple Magic Headband With Bangs. It has super tight coils that spring and everything. If you’re in the process of growing out your mane or just need a vacation from styling, it may be the perfect dupe for your locks. • Pros

So you’re a wig aficionado, are you? This Full Lace Body Wave Wig is for you. The lace blends into your skin, practically disappearing. The pre-plucked unit is perfect for creating baby hair, making ponytails, or wearing it half up half down. The cascading waves frame your gorgeous face, and are simply hypnotic. You could literally wear a burlap bag with this and still be fashionable. The maximum length available is 28 inches, but if that’s too much you can grab it as short as 16 inches. Since you’re already a wig expert your glue game is probably tight. However, the wig also has adjustable straps and four clips to make it budge-proof.

Promising review: “This wig is amazing. It looks super natural, and the lace looks so good on the scalp. I didn’t even have to do much to it. I highly recommended!”

Beauty Forever V Part Curly Wig

$124
  • Description
  • Pros

There are many reasons we opt for wigs. Sometimes it’s about trying something new and fun. Other times it’s about feeling more like ourselves. If that resonates, you’ll like this glueless number from Beauty Forever, especially if you have tighter coils. What makes it special is that it doesn’t require a cap. Its top opens in a V-shape, leaving your natural part exposed. Clips towards the part fasten to your hair for security. It’s almost like extensions, but with one entire unit instead of pieces of hair. You get a thicker more manageable do without losing the texture that makes you uniquely you. To install, braid your hair into whatever style leaves your part exposed, and then secure the clips. It’s really that easy. Not braid savvy? That’s fine. A low tight bun will do. The wig’s length starts at 14 inches and goes to 24, so you’ll have plenty of tendrils to disguise your hair beneath.

Promising review: “I was very skeptical but I actually like this unit! It’s lightweight, matches well with 4c curls, and the clips don’t pull in my hair. The area where the clips are are seamless so you don’t have to worry too much about bumpiness.”

  • Pros

If you always wanted to try the ombre trend, this loose wave lace wig is the shade to try. The fiery color will make you feel vivacious and ready to conquer the world. If you had messing around with adjustable straps, you’ll really like the elastic band inside the unit. It keeps things snug, and though there are clips, you don’t really need them. The darker roots of the glueless wig make it look ultra realistic, and the Swiss lace keeps the fact you’re wearing a wig a secret. Wear this to work, a date, or when you need a pick-me-up. Curly Middle Part Lace Brazilian Wig

$58
  • Description
  • Pros

If you love your 3b/3c hair, but hate how temperamental it can be, I highly recommend this affordable lace number. It comes with a natural part, has the look of freshly washed ringlets, and doesn’t need glue or plucking. Made with Brazilian hair, the unit offers minimal shedding, and can be styled with spray, mouse or oil. The part is deep, so I recommend brushing your cap with a little foundation before placing the wig on. This piece starts at 10 inches and goes to up to 18, which gives you the option to try this look short and cute or long and wild.

Promising review: “I absolutely love this wig! When you apply water it gets super curly and its it easy to manage…A lot of wigs I’ve bought in the past have to be altered to fit my head correctly, but this wig comes with the combs on the lace and adjustable hooks. I did not find a need for any additional adjustments and it stays on through a lot! It’s easy to style and easy to manage. I love the density and like how I can put it in a pony tail or a bun without worrying that my lace will show or the wig will pull back.”

Nnzes Short Wavy Wig

$24
  • Description
  • Pros

I swore off dyeing my hair after I tried to go blonde sans stylist. Although my real hair is healthier for it, I miss experimenting with different colors. I chose Nnzes Short Wavy Wig for our Best Wigs For Black Women list because along with being under $50, it’s available in a bunch of crazy shades. On the more demure and natural side it can be worn in black mixed brown (shown above), but it also comes in pink grey, and red wine. The soft waves gives this synthetic unit a more natural look, and a ventilated cap is included to make wearing it more breathable. Although some Amazon customers report being able to use heat on this look, we still suggest saving the blow dryer for wigs with human hair.

Promising review: “I’m new to wigs and this is my third [unit]...It’s soft, easy to comb, and has curls. The bangs felt uneven, so my friend helped me cut them so they are now straight and [less] in my eyes. I’ve already received a compliment on the color from a stranger… The wig is not heavy or hot, and easy to wear.”
