Woman Hasn’t Smiled for More than 40 Years to Prevent Wrinkles

We’ve heard of some crazy beauty secrets over the years, including Raquel Welch’s fondness for udder cream and Sandra Bullock’s promise that hemorrhoid cream is the cure for under-eye bags, but this might top the list of over-the-top skincare. Even Gwyneth Paltrow and her Goop line look elementary in comparison!

Nicknamed the Mona Lisa, Tess Christian hasn’t cracked a grin in over 40 years. At girls’ nights out, she sits stone-faced while her friends throw their heads back and erupt in laughter. No, Tess isn’t mad—she just doesn’t want to get wrinkles. With the dedication of a military officer, she’s trained herself to control her face muscles; she’s absolutely mastered her poker face.

“Everyone asks if I’ve had Botox, but I haven’t, and I know that it’s thanks to the fact I haven’t laughed or smiled since I was a teenager. My dedication has paid off, I don’t have a single line on my face,” she told the Daily Mail.

“Yes, I am vain and want to remain youthful. My strategy is more natural than Botox and more effective than any expensive beauty cream or facial.”

Didn’t it ever tick off a friend or family member to never be able to tell if Christian was happy, you might ask? Her ex-husband, Nigel, was apparently never bothered by her straight face, and the couple’s daughter, Stevie, isn’t put off by her mother’s sullen visage.

Christian said she’s started to notice her friends’ wrinkles, which made her realize that her smile-less years might have finally paid off. But was it really worth it?

“When you smile you release endorphins, known as ‘happy hormones’ that make you feel good,” said psychologist Amanda Hills. “Not only that, but the more you do it the happier you feel, because you are telling the neural pathways in your brain you are happy—even if you aren’t.”

Christian has certainly maintained a youthful appearance that belies her 50-something years, but we certainly wouldn’t give up a hearty laugh each day or refrain from smiling at our grandkids just for the sake of not getting wrinkles.
