It's every parent's nightmare: You're in the house while your two kids are playing in the back yard when suddenly you hear terrified shrieks coming from outside. That tragic scenario was an Aspen, CO, mom's reality this past Friday evening. As she rushed outside, her older son screamed that his brother had been attacked by a fox.

It was no fox. Instead, to her horror, the mom saw a mountain lion hunched over her youngest son. As she raced over, she realized that the animal had the boy's head in its mouth. She pried its jaws open and got the boy's head out. Then she scooped her son up and ran away. The lion didn't chase her.
Just then her husband got home from his run. He called 911 at about 8 PM and took the injured boy and mom to the hospital, driving at top speed. The mom had scratches on her arms and legs; the little boy had deep cuts to his face and head. The mom was treated in the local Aspen hospital, while her son was flown into the Denver Children's Hospital.

The mountain lion was put down by a US Forest Service law enforcement officer, according to the county sheriff's office. As sad as it is to hear of a wild animal's death, this story had a happier ending than the more tragic kid-and-animal encounter in Orlando last week--all thanks to the quick-thinking heroic mom.
