Red plates are thought to release a "danger" or "avoidance" signal to us, which may reduce our appetite, thus reducing the overall amount of food we eat in a sitting.
"Snack foods—unhealthy stuff on a red plate—you end up eating a little bit less because it's that red color on a plate where it seems to trigger some sort of danger or avoidance signal," said Dr. Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Oxford.
And what color plate do you not want to eat off of if you're trying to lose weight? White.
In 2011, researchers from the University of Valencia asked people to eat the same exact dessert off of a white and black plate, changing the order of which plate was used first. The results revealed that participants not only enjoyed the dessert more off the white plate, but thought it tasted sweeter.

"White plates generally have a contrasting color to the food, so people are better able to judge the color of the food itself rather than being influenced by the background," Dr. Spence added. "It may also be that our brains keep track of the all the foods we've eaten and the sort of plates we've eaten them off."
