Yikes! This Is How Much You’re Expected to Shell Out on a Wedding Gift

Tags:

With spring finally showing itself and summer right around the corner, wedding season is on the horizon. And, according to Tendr, a service for sending and receiving money, the average cash gift might have you clutching your wallets a little tighter.

Of course, the amount will vary by state and time of year, but Tendr’s “Wedding Season Gift Report” lists the national average at $160, which is certainly not pocket change by any stretch of the imagination. Not surprisingly, wedding guests give more at spring and summer weddings than they do at fall and winter ceremonies. Donations peak at August weddings before settling down until spiking again in February.

Any guesses as to which state gives the most? Well, Vermonters just might be the most generous, giving an average of $245! Rhode Island came in at a close second, with an average wedding cash gift valuing $235.

As for the states who give the least, Arkansas leads the other 49 with an average gift of $73. Indiana, Idaho, North Dakota, and Mississippi are the other states with gifts under $100.

Despite all this talk of money, you should only give what you’re comfortable giving. And, unless you find yourself with a bridezilla who buys a $10,500 dress and asks you to chip in, any generosity will be appreciated. Another thing to remember when opening your checkbook, according to Tendr, is your relationship to the bride and groom; perhaps you’d give more to a granddaughter or grandson than you would give to a second or third cousin.

And, of course, money isn’t the only thing you can leave the newlyweds. Passing down a treasured family heirloom or opting for a homemade gift can mean so much more than money. Unless you’re Kate Middleton and Prince William, most brides and grooms don’t have an expectation for an extravagant gift. At the end of the day, we say it’s really the thought that counts.
