If you’re trying to lose weight, good news may be coming your way in the form of a new supplement! And the best part is, the weight-busting agent is a natural substance, so there are no unnecessary chemicals with names we can’t even pronounce involved here.
Researchers have found a plant substance which significantly reduces calorie intake by tricking the body into thinking that it is full. Participants in the study who took the supplement, called Amarasate, didn’t feel effects of fullness after taking the pill, but ended up consuming around 220 fewer calories at the following meal than those who did not take the pill.

The reason why is bittersweet--literally! According to John Ingram, PhD, a researcher from the New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited, the pill relies on what is called the “bitter break” mechanism. Foods with a bitter taste cause the body to release three hormones that signal to the body that it is no longer hungry, which reduces calorie intake and helps with weight loss.

The pill is not yet available, but there’s hope until then: by adding bitter foods into your diet, you can naturally reduce the amount of food you eat, without needing to sacrifice feeling satisfyingly full. As Dr. Ingram says, “Eating more broccoli can’t be a bad thing.”
We can’t wait for this pill to hit the shelves, but we’ll be sure to serve ourselves an extra helping of broccoli or kale in the meantime!
