If the classic Disney movie Cinderella doesn’t show that we don’t have the best first impression of stepparents, we don’t know what does. But this family defies the classic fairy tale and illustrates that the stigma that some stepmoms and stepdads suffer is entirely unwarranted. Kristin Russell’s stepdad, Dave, proved his undying love for her mom in such a touching way that she spent years looking for ways to repay the kindness and devotion to her mom and family.
Back when Dave was about to marry her mom, money was tight. The price tag on their wedding kept going up, and they were worried about how they were going to pay the whole thing off. That’s when Dave sold his beloved 1973 Porsche 914 to cover the cost of his wedding with Kristin’s mom. He took apart his special car and sold the pieces so they could have the wedding day of their dreams.
But he wasn’t just sweet to her mom; he embraced Kristin like she was his own biological daughter. “My first memories of him are playing [B]arbies with me and reading to me. He coached every softball team I was on and came to every Karate tournament. He never had to do any of that,” she writes of him.
To thank him for all of his sweet gestures, Kristin spent two years saving money she got from her deployment and researching ways to give him back the car he had sacrificed for her family. She writes that she waited until she found an identical one in great condition to make the surprise even more special--and presented it to him one Father’s Day.
