Iris Grace Halmshaw, of England, is 6 years old--and when doctors diagnosed her with autism when she was a toddler, the prognosis was grim. They warned her mom, Arabella Carter-Johnson, that the little girl probably wouldn't speak, and would be unable to form relationships with anyone.
Even the most ordinary tasks were a challenge. Iris Grace was so afraid of water that Carter-Johnson dreaded giving her daughter a bath and washing her hair. Dressing her daughter was also hard, as Iris Grace hated the feel of clothing against her skin (especially the labels).
But all that changed when Carter-Johnson brought home a tiny Maine Coon cat, who instantly snuggled up in the little girl's arms. Now the cat keeps her company as Iris Grace goes about her day playing, going outside, and, yes, bathing and swimming.

Thula taught Iris Grace to get over her fear of water. In fact, the two of them swim and bathe together. Yes, a cat who loves water!

The little girl is now thriving. She speaks, she plays alongside other kids, and she paints. Her watercolors are like Impressionists paintings, and she sells them. Her mom wrote a book about her incredible daughter's journey--and the even more incredible role that Thula played in helping Iris Grace find her voice.
