We’ve been saying it all along, but now science is repeating our message: Give yourself a break! You don’t have to be perfect--it’s boring, anyway--and you don’t have to do everything. In fact, cancelling that meeting that’s stressing you out might just be the best thing for you and your health, according to researchers.
Giving yourself permission to cancel plans with friends without the guilt may actually make you happier, according to a recent study published in the British Journal of Psychology. It all comes down to one huge change in the way we interact. Back when our hunter-gatherer ancestors were around, frequent social interaction was necessary for survival--but with the Internet and a variety of platforms to keep us connected like Facebook and Twitter, we need the actual face-to-face time less.
That’s not to say you should conduct all your hangouts online. Just make sure that if something comes up and you have to rearrange your schedule, you let this one slide without beating yourself up.
