Graduating college with a degree is a huge feat worth celebrating no matter how old you are when you reach this milestone. Tap Van Kieu is no exception, and as he walked across the stage on his special day, he put on quite the display for the audience by highlighting all of his other amazing accomplishments through the years. The result was an inspiring message.
The 70-year-old man, a father of three, carried a sign with a timeline of events ranging from when he got married to when he became a U.S. citizen, a father, AND a grandfather. All of these monumental moments had checkmarks next to them, but his college graduation, last on the list, had a special glitter checkmark next to it, indicating just how special this day was for Kieu. If that isn't a sure sign of his joy, then his huge grin should say it all!
According to Huffington Post, Kieu's daughter Mary said, "He's never been the kind of guy who could be idle for more than an afternoon, so he decides he wants to pursue his dream to finish college." Mary said her father, now a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, has dreamt of teaching choral singing to children and having his grandson, Oliver, see him graduate.
Kieu fled Vietnam in 1975, during the fall of Saigon, with his wife and children. Upon entry in the U.S., he worked multiple jobs and attended community college. However, when he retired at the age of 65 he realized he wanted to challenge himself and graduate from a university.
"I would describe dad's story as one of so many other immigrants who are lucky enough to call this wonderful country home. Work hard, believe in yourself, never give up, and even at the ripe age of 70, you can reach your goal," his daughter said.
Kieu's sweet celebratory message certainly gives us moments to look forward to, as well as hope that you can conquer any task at any age.
