Stop the self-imposed quarantine! The way to avoid a winter cold could be to do exactly the opposite, in fact. Protect yourself from the annoying infection--and lessen the severity your symptoms--by embracing a simple ritual: hugging your friends and family more often.
People with greater social support and more frequent hugs got sick less often and, when they did, saw less severe symptoms than those with less support and fewer hugs, according to a 2014 Psychology Science study.
It all comes down to stress. Giving in and letting your loved ones give you a squeeze effectively reduces stress--and all the negative effects of high stress levels, like getting sick. Keep washing your hands, of course, but don’t forget to stop and spread the cold protection by hugging a friend.
