Some brides and grooms are now taking out the carpentry tools at their weddings. It may seem like an odd sight, but they're about to build something surprisingly heartwarming for their marriage.
They're putting the final touches on their "First Fight Box" that they will open after their first argument as newlyweds. Interestingly enough, the project starts before the big day, with two handwritten letters.
"A few weeks before the wedding, take some time to each write a letter to one another, expressing your thoughts about the good qualities that you found in your future partner, the reasons for falling in love with them, and your hopes and dreams for the future," said relationship coach Larry James.
Neither person reads the other's letter, and they place both notes in sealed envelopes. They put together two bottles of wine alongside the envelopes to put in the box. Some couples create the box themselves, while others use a pre-made one. During the actual ceremony, the officiant explains the tradition and what the couple has done to prepare for it. Then, the bride and groom take turns hammering nails into the box to seal it shut.

The couple promises to open the box after their first fight or their fifth anniversary, whichever comes first. (Likely, very likely, it will be the fight.) They vow to retreat to separate places in the house to read the love letter their spouse wrote before the wedding, and maybe have a glass of wine in the meantime.
"Even if you are not seeing eye-to-eye at that very moment, it will remind you of all the reasons you chose this person as your partner and all the things that helped shape the life [you've] created together," James said. "Never take your blessings of being together for granted."
Now that's something we can get behind!
