As we all know by now, restless nights are bad for our health. Years of poor quality z's can increase our risk for heart disease and add on pounds, which further damages our health.
So what if there were a way to get more shut-eye AND lose weight by doing one easy thing? Turns out there is, at least according to a study from Purdue University.
Researchers divided 58 middle-aged people (average age: mid-50s) into two groups eating a low-carb, low-fat diet. The difference: one consumed a high-protein diet of pork, beef, beans, soy, and dairy products; the other, a normal-protein diet with the same foods.
After four months both groups had lost weight, but the people consuming the higher protein diet were sleeping better, too. They also had less fat and more muscle, and lower blood pressure.
Now granted, the sample size for this study was pretty small. But the results are intriguing. If you're not sleeping well and need to lose weight, talk to a doctor about whether this type of diet is right for you.
