Many teachers start the school day with the Pledge of Allegiance or with a rundown of the tasks students should complete during class. But teacher Chris Ulmer's morning routine is quite different.
Ulmer, who teaches special education in Jacksonville, Florida, begins each day of class by complimenting each and every student in his classroom. In a heartwarming Facebook video that has now gone viral, Ulmer demonstrates this practice of showing positive affirmations to his kids, some who are autistic and others who have brain injuries. And his reason for doing so is one worth celebrating.
"Children learn to love or hate at an early age,” he says. “I think it’s time we actively work towards teaching love and acceptance."
It is worth keeping Ulmer's wise words in consideration. After all, the words we use, especially when speaking to children, matter. And when those words are kind, they can really make an amazing difference to children who need it most. Watch the video and see for yourself!
