What do a better mood, increased energy, a smaller waist, and firmer, smoother skin all have in common? They’re just some of the benefits of getting a good night’s sleep.
But we’re not just talking about sleeping in on Saturdays and Sundays here. That’s the only catch. At least when it comes to your skin, you’ve got to consistently log more than six hours of zzzs a night to boast this benefit. Lack of adequate sleep boosts your body’s levels of cortisol, the stress hormone that’s responsible for unwelcome side effects like a widening waist and sagging skin. In excess amounts, it essentially speeds up the aging of your skin by breaking down collagen, the protein that gives your skin its firm structure and smooth appearance.
We know it sounds difficult at first: Life gets crazy, schedules fill up, and sometimes hitting the hay at a later hour than you’d like is simply a necessity. But more frequently than any of us would like to admit, it’s late and we’re still up doing something that can wait until tomorrow: watching TV, checking Facebook, worrying--you name it!
Remind yourself that you can pick up where you left off in the morning, and get yourself to bed. (Except the worrying. Just leave that behind!) It’s a win-win: You’ll feel better from the extra rest, and you’ll be bursting with confidence from your healthy, glowing skin. Now that’s worth missing a little TV for!
