When subjects in a Penn State University study poured themselves a bowl of wheat flakes, they consumed 34 percent fewer calories than when they poured themselves the same cereal with the flakes crushed to less than half their original volume. Study author Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., says foods with a larger volume allows for a more generous portion size, which provides sensory cues that help us feel satisfied. So choosing cereal with big pieces (like flakes or squares) instead of small ones (like granola) is an easy way to trim calories. Genius!
