If modern Valentine’s Day traditions might have been invented by Hallmark to sell greeting cards, as the joke goes, then this diet myth might very well have been created by food companies to sell us cereal and granola bars. While we’re kidding about the food companies, science is completely serious. Breakfast is not, in fact, the most important meal of the day and, no, forcing down a plate of eggs in the AM is not necessary to dropping pounds.
Participants who ate meals in the morning for six weeks ended up at roughly the same place weight- and health-wise as those who were told to fast in the mornings in new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. So the takeaway is really this: If you were never a breakfast eater to begin with, don’t feel the need to start making time for the meal now. A simple cup of coffee is just fine, if that’s what you prefer.
But if you do enjoy having a morning meal, here are the best ways to enjoy your AM eats and slim down at the same time.
Eggs only have up to 75 calories each–giving you the low-calorie protein hit that you need to get you through the day.
