Starbucks Wants You to Color in This Year’s Holiday Cup

Tags:

Starbucks has unveiled its 2017 holiday cup — and it’s probably one of the company’s most creative ideas yet, with a color-it-in-yourself design. The chain released the coloring-book inspired design on Wednesday, ushering in the holiday season with this year’s theme, “Give Good.”

“This year’s cup is intentionally designed to encourage our customers to add their own color and illustrations,” Starbucks Executive Creative Director Leanne Fremar said in a press release. “We love the idea of everyone making this year’s cup their own.”

Starbucks further described the design as “a pair of hands holding red cups of coffee, an ode to cups of years past, connected with swirling ribbons with lively holiday scenes and splashes of red and green.”

In addition to the swirling illustration, the cup’s sleeve features the invitation to “Give Good.”

“Giving Good can be as small as someone opening the door for you, or recognizing the people that enrich your life — your child’s teacher, a caregiver, a family friend,” Fremar added. “The holidays are a time to celebrate all the good we give to each other and our community.”

Starbucks began the holiday-themed cup tradition in 1997. Since then, bona fide Starbucks fans gather around to see and critique the new edition each year.

Customers decorate the iconic white cup.

This isn’t the first time Starbucks has asked its customers to get creative. In 2014, Starbucks held a White Cup Contest in which customers in the U.S. and Canada were asked to doodle on their white Starbucks cup, take a photo of said design, and submit it through social media using the hashtag #WhiteCupContest. Starbucks received nearly 4,000 entries in just three weeks.

The winning design belonged to 20-year-old Brita Lynn and was featured on Starbucks’ 2013 reusable plastic cup. Today, Brita credits Starbucks for her the chance to show her talent to the world.

Today marks 3 years since I won the @starbucks White Cup Contest! This single design is the reason why I am where I am today. Without the recognition from winning the contest, I wouldn't have all you amazing people following along with what I love to do. I wouldn't be able to wake up and do what I love to do every day. And I definitely wouldn't be here at the @3riversartsfest for the past 3 years with more than half of my inventory sold out! No matter how cheesey it may sound, I just want to say thank you so much for everyone who is along this journey with me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate every single one of you!!! #starbucks #whitecupcontest #zenspire ☕️ ps June 11th is now Zenspire Designs birthday! ☺️🎂
