In a study at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, subjects who ate a 240-calorie serving of pistachios (about 74 nuts) daily lost up to 12 pounds in 12 weeks without making any other diet changes. That's because pistachios boast 6 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber and 7 grams of waist-whittling monounsaturated fats per ounce. This combo boosts satiety to cut snacking, while revving calorie burn. What’s more, USDA researchers found that a daily dose of the nuts can lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol by 12 percent in just four weeks. (Hint: Stick with pistachios in the shell. The extra effort it takes to eat them will reduce mindless munching, so you get the perks without overdoing it on the calories.)
