Dechia Gerald was absolutely heartbroken when her police officer husband was killed in the line of duty. But when Baton Rouge Police Officer Matthew Gerald was slain several weeks ago, no one knew of the gift he left behind.
Now, Dechia is going public with that present.

It all started when Dechia struggled to find something to wear to her late husband's funeral. Her two young daughters matter-of-factly told her she was expecting, or that she had a "baby in [her] tummy."
At first, Dechia couldn't believe it. But two at-home pregnancy tests and a doctor's appointment confirmed her little girls' guess.
She was overcome with emotion, wondering how she'd raise a newborn on her own. But then, she got little nudges that Matthew was still with her--especially when she saw the ultrasound.
"It looks like a wedding ring inside of there," she said. "I felt like when I saw that he was with us."

Now, she sees the new baby as a blessing.
"There's no better gift that a husband could leave behind than a baby, a gift from God," she says. "There's no better gift."
We couldn't agree more.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gerald family, and with all people who have been affected by violence.
