Talk about birthday surprises. Jeanette Carty was quietly celebrating her 100th birthday when she heard someone at the door. Standing outside was a member of the Norfolk Fire and Rescue, waiting to accompany her outside. The elderly woman had no choice but to go the door.

There she was greeted by the sight of a crowd of firefighters, recruits, and trainees--all waiting to wish her a happy birthday. And it wasn't only because she was turning 100, either. Carty comes from a family of firefighters--her late husband was a firefighter for the city of Norfolk as were her nephew and brother. She got a round of applause and a lovely bouquet and many thanks from the first responders.
