When you experience something as traumatic as getting bitten by a shark, you may go into shock, or at least survival mode. Not 10-year-old Kaley Szarmack. After a bad bite, she went farther into the water to do something many adults wouldn't be brave enough to do: She saved her 6-year-old friend.
Kaley was getting out of the water in Jacksonville Beach, FL, when a three-foot-long shark chomped on her leg, according to People.com. She managed to free herself, only to return to the water to pull her younger pal out of harm's way. That's impressive enough, but consider the seriousness of the bite she'd just endured: It required 90 stitches and made her firefighter father say, "It was difficult to see." Luckily, she's now recovering and will be just fine.

“I am just so proud of her. And so thankful that she is doing so well," her dad, Dave Szarmack, told WJXT-TV. While the injury will leave a large scar, she's going to have "quite a story to tell."
