Soup and salad creation may seem like a more nuanced art than crafting the perfect sandwich, but the stacked lunchtime classic has its own intricacies if you’re looking for the best bite. Stack your fillings wrong, and you’ll be left with a soggy, unappetizing mess--and a long, hungry afternoon ahead. But use this two-second trick and your sandwich, and energy levels, are saved.
Instead of creating a moisture barrier on only one side by using the cheese, swipe a very thin smear of olive oil on both slices of bread. These sides should be used as the inside of the sandwich, and will keep your more waterlogged toppings like tomato slices from soaking through your whole wheat. You don’t need much, so dimply dip your knife in a little bit of olive oil and use what sticks to the cutlery. Stack your sandwich at will and rest assured that lunchtime won’t come with a soggy surprise.
