The mass shooting in Orlando on June 12 horrified everyone, but it had an especially tragic resonance for those who've lost family members in similar tragedies. So when Nelba Márquez-Greene--whose 6-year-old daughter was gunned down along with 26 other children and adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School--heard the news, she expressed her sorrow on the Facebook memorial page she'd created for Ana after she was killed in 2012.

"My first reaction was visceral. I know the horror of waiting to hear. A helicopter flew overhead. It made everything too real. Too familiar. I panicked. I called my friend. I cried. Fifty people. I am reliving being one of the family members in wait," she wrote. That made her want to crawl on the sofa with her son and watch Harry Potter movies all day or even barricade her family indoors for the rest of their lives, she wrote.
But she had one message for the families in Florida--and by extension the rest of us. After apologizing to them that "our tragedy here in Sandy Hook wasn't enough to save your loved ones," she told them to ignore the haters who will say that their kids brought this upon themselves for being gay.
"But my message was and is and always will be 'love wins'," she continued. "Your loss today will bring out the worst AND the best in all of us. May we commit to being our best selves in honor of what you now bear. Because hate, ugly, evil, and prejudice cannot silence love, courage, good."

As for those who want to help the families with donations, she asked everyone to please wait "until you know for sure that your hard-earned dollars will be received by VICTIMS... and not by individuals, groups and organizations designed to benefit from tragedies."
