As the saying goes: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. But in this case it's the Roman police who are getting raves for their quick-thinking and their humanity when they responded to a 911 call that came from an apartment building in the city.
Some neighbors heard screaming and crying coming from the apartment belonging to an elderly couple, ages 94 and 84. The two were virtual shut-ins--and the neighbors, hearing the wails, feared the worse. But when the police came they quickly got to the bottom of the problem.

The couple spent much of their time watching TV and that night it was filled with bad news. That caused the woman to start crying and screaming. So no crime. But the police officers figured out the couple was lonely and probably malnourished--there were only a few dried grapes on the kitchen table and no sign that anyone had cooked a good meal lately.
So while one of the first responders cooked pasta, the others kept the two old people company and listened to their stories. Then they all ate some buttered pasta and parmesan together.
