Long before they split up, royal watchers were aware that Princess Diana and Prince Charles weren’t exactly crazy about each other. There were pictures that showed them sitting miles apart at royal events, or their heads turned away from each other while they sat at some banquet.

But this rare photo reveals the cracks in their marriage many, many years before anyone suspected their relationship had taken a rocky turn. It was taken two months after their wedding. The prince and princess, who was just 20 years old at the time, were in Scotland, attending the Braemar Gathering, a yearly event that’s been attended by the royal family since Queen Victoria’s times!

While photographers snapped many pics of the royal couple that day, one savvy shutterbug caught Princess Diana in a totally unguarded moment. While Queen Elizabeth is looking at the festivities (or perhaps smiling at her subjects), and Charles has glanced away from his bride (maybe he’s chatting with someone), Princess Diana gives an eye roll, as if she’s had enough of the family she’s married into. Or maybe she was bored. Or maybe she realized that Prince Charles wasn’t quite the attentive husband she thought he’d be. (After all, he’d really been in love with Camilla.)
