It's been almost 36 years since Princess Diana and Prince Charles's famous wedding, but previously unknown details are still emerging. According to a new book by Sally Bedell Smith, the royal's iconic nuptials had a few hiccups.
In her novel, Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, Smith reveals that Princess Diana made a glaring mistake while she was at the altar: she accidentally called Prince Charles the wrong name during her vows. Yikes.

Although you may be quick to cringe, the blunder wasn't actually as bad as it sounds. According to a historical article written by the BBC, Diana called her husband-to-be "Philip Charles" instead of "Charles Philip." Ultimately, the BBC attributes the slight flip-flop to "wedding day jitters."
"Wedding day nerves were apparent during the ceremony," the article says. "Diana mixed up the Prince's names, calling him Philip Charles Arthur George, rather than Charles Philip."
Heck, we even forget our kids' own names, so Diana's slip of the tongue is hardly worthy of punishment. And with all the pressure of a widely publicized royal wedding, it's not hard to understand why Diana got a little tongue-tied. In fact, the July 1981 wedding was one of the most watched events in TV history!

Diana wasn't the only royal to make a mistake in her vows, however. The BBC reported that Prince Charles uttered the words "thy goods" in his vows, rather than "my worldly goods," which is the correct phrase.
This news comes on the heels of other surprising revelations about the couple’s relationship, including their attitudes towards the wedding and even how they spent their honeymoon—all documented in Bedell’s latest book.
Although the couple famously endured a rocky relationship, we can't fault them for these minor hiccups. After all, Princess Diana and Prince Charles—although royalty—were still only human. We can’t be too hard on them for that.
