Along with being a successful actress and the fiancée of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has been a longtime vocal supporter for gender equality. She even delivered a powerful speech on the topic to a United Nations conference back in 2015. Now she’s confirmed that her husband-to-be shares her views on feminism — and we couldn’t be happier.
When the couple visited Cardiff, Wales, this week, the former Suits star told a fan who Harry identifies as a feminist. "She was so lovely," 23-year-old Jessica Phillips told People. "I said it was really lovely to have a feminist in the royal family."
Meghan then pointed at her fiancé, and said, "He’s a feminist, too." Just another reason to love this forward-thinking royal couple.
In fact, Prince Harry has implicitly revealed his feminist beliefs before, most notably when delivering a speech at the Nepal Girl Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, back in 2016. "While the unique challenges faced by girls is not a topic I have spoken much about in the past, I think it’s important to acknowledge something that has become obvious to me and is already known to everyone in this room," he said.
"There are way too many obstacles between girls and the opportunities they deserve, whether it’s a girl in Lesotho, Africa, living with HIV, or the talented young woman in Britain who doesn’t get taken seriously because of where she grew up, or the 14-year-old girl forced out of school, so she can get married here in Nepal. We need to acknowledge that so many countries and cultures are failing to protect the opportunities of young women and girls in the way they do for boys." he said, before concluding that "It cannot just be women who speak up for girls."
