Keep Out the Cold and Bring Nature Indoors With the 2019 Color of the Year

A new year means new resolutions, like eating healthier and moving more. If your promise for 2019 was to spruce up your home, what better way to do that than with the 2019 color of the year? After all, winter will surely keep us locked inside, so why not put that time to good use and add a splash of color to your walls? According to PPG Paints, the hue that will reign supreme this year is a regal shade of deep green.

The hue is called “Night Watch,” and it’s a lush, comforting sea of rich emerald. “The urge to reconnect with nature is driven by today’s tumultuous, still somewhat rebellious, always-connected society. Empty space in our lives — such as downtime waiting for a bus or lulls in conversation — tends to be filled with the use of our smartphones and devices,” PPG’s senior color marketing manager Dee Schlotter said. “Being surrounded by ‘Night Watch’ can give some of that empty space back by pulling our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

PPG Paints has been around for more than 100 years, and they’ve recently started releasing their picks for color of the year. To determine which hues earn this coveted distinction, PPG’s global color team gets together annually to decide the next year’s color. This time around, the group spent days debating before settling on “Night Watch,” as well as four new palettes that are tied together by the color of the year.

Considering the color green is often associated with growth, renewal, and fertility, it’s not surprising that staring at “Night Watch” for just a moment instantly transports us to some faraway land of peaceful relaxation. So why enjoy this beautiful pigment only indoors? If you take a closer look at your surroundings — if you really open your eyes — you’ll notice this stunning flush of color painting the world around you.
