It's a safe bet that the 4th of July doesn't rank high on the list of most dogs' favorite holidays. The hot weather alone isn't fun for furry critters. And then there are the fireworks in the evening--a sure anxiety maker for most pets. Now pups--and their owners--have another holiday concern.

Police are warning dog owners to stay away from any stray tennis balls they find. In the past few years, pranksters have been making illegal tennis ball bombs by putting the explosive materials from firecrackers into a hollowed out ball, then setting them off. Sometimes the "bomb" doesn't explode and people just leave them there, thinking they're duds. Then pets or their people find them, and play fetch without thinking. One dog in Portland had to be put down when on of these homemade bombs exploded in its mouth.

Telltale signs of tampering include duct tape around the ball, incisions or holes, or a wick or something sticking out of the ball. If you find one of these tennis ball bombs, call 911.
