‘Arctic Cold’ Temperatures Ahead This Week for Many States, Forecasters Say

Update (12/11) — If you thought it was cold last weekend, experts say it’s going to get a lot colder in most of the country in the coming days. How cold, exactly? Arctic cold, according to the Weather Channel.

A southward dip in jet stream is set to bring more cold air throughout this week, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. In some northern metro areas like Minneapolis and Chicago, temperatures could dip into the twenties or even teens. But even southern cities like Atlanta and Charlotte can expect to see freezing temps during the midweek. We’d suggest breaking out your puffiest jacket, if you haven’t already, for when you venture outside.

And yes, in case you’re wondering, these colder temperatures do mean the possibility of some more snow for the upper Midwest and Northeast regions. In fact, the National Weather service has issued multiple winter advisories in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Alaska, Wisconsin, and Vermont.

Update (12/7) — Forecasters warned us about a week ago that it was about to get “real cold, real fast” in several states. It looks like they were right — even in regions of the country that don’t typically see super-low temperatures.

Due to the cold air’s path, parts of some states in the Deep South might see snow on Friday, December 8, including Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. This won’t be a major winter storm, and most places in this region will see cold rain. But it’s worth noting if you live in those areas that snow — especially wet snow — and sleet may be in your near future. The buildup of any snow will likely be less than one inch.

Don’t think the rest of the country escapes the cold blast, though. Two major storm systems are set to bring lake-effect snow to the Great Lakes region this weekend. And it could get heavy — bringing up to a foot of snow in some regions.

Original Article (12/1) — If you’ve been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, you better bask in the glory while you still can. According to the Weather Channel, it’s about to get “real cold, real fast” in several states.

After this weekend, meteorologists predict a serious temperature drop as a polar vortex threatens large parts of the country. Though the Midwest and Northeast can expect to see 40, 50, and even 60-degree weather during the weekend, it’ll probably be the last time for a while that folks who live there can expect to go outside without a big ol’ coat. The cold blast will make its way through the middle of the country at the beginning of the week and lead eastward by Wednesday.

But don’t put away the hot cocoa after next week. According to Accuweather, it seems like that nippy weather might be sticking around for some time throughout the month.

“Arctic air with intense cold is most likely to first invade the northern Plains then progress eastward toward the middle of December,” said AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

In case you’re wondering, this sudden decrease in temperature does mean the possibility of some snow, particularly for Midwesterners. The Weather Channel said this forecast means that both the Great Lakes and the Northeast can expect a colder than average beginning of winter. They even called it a “winter reality check.”

Well, you heard ’em! If you haven’t invested in a cozy winter coat, hat, scarf, and gloves, the time to do that is now. Don’t wait until you’re already freezing to prepare to bundle up.
