We get a lot wrong when it comes to healthy eating and weight loss. Eggs? Totally good for you. Avocado? It can actually help you burn fat! Carbs? It’s time to finally welcome them back onto your plate.
When you’re trying to get healthy and slim down, carbs are usually the first things to go. We give up everything from cookies to bread to pasta in the name of a smaller waist and healthier weight. That’s exactly why you need to sit down for this huge piece of nutrition news: The healthiest people in the world eat a lot of carbs!
Take a second to do a happy dance, because we certainly did.
Researchers at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Tokyo kept tabs on the health of over 80,000 people in Japan for a span of 15 years. What they found was that the people who stuck most closely with the country’s recommended dietary guidelines, which support higher carb and lower fat diets, had healthier hearts and a lower risk of mortality.
Although keeping an eye on the Asian country for health advice isn’t new--they have the second longest life expectancy in the whole world while America ranks 43rd--researchers have mostly focused on their consumption of fish and low levels of fat. If you ask us, this is the bigger piece of news.
It should be noted that people living in Japan walk an average of 7,000 steps a day, which is considerably higher than the average American’s 5,000. But if we get to sit down to a bigger bowl of pasta at the end of that extra slog, we consider the extra mileage worth it.
