It was a regular Friday night for 22-year-old Isobel Bowdery, a young South African who lives in Paris. She'd gone that night to hear the American band Eagles of Death Metal with friends at the Bataclan, the concert hall that turned into a scene of carnage after terrorists burst through its doors. "The atmosphere was so happy and everyone was dancing and smiling. And then when the men came through the front entrance and began the shooting, we naively believed it was all part of the show," she writes in a Facebook post that's gone viral.
It's not the first-hand eyewitness account to the massacre that's fueling this post's popularity, but Bowdery's message of love. She writes that she lay on the floor, pretending to be dead. "Holding my breath, trying to not move, not cry--not giving those men the fear they longed to see....I envisioned every face that I have ever loved and whispered, "I love you." Over and over again. Wishing that those I love knew knew that no matter what happened to me, to keep believing in the good in people."
She then goes on to write that the people who weren't as lucky as she was were also thinking of their loved ones. And she thanked the people who helped her. The man who put "his own life on the line" to cover her head as she tried not to whimper, the couple whose last words were of love, the people who picked her up on the road and consoled her after she escaped, but before she knew her friends were safe, the police who rescued them.
She ends on a stirring note of hope. "Last night, the lives of many were forever changed and it is up to us to be better people--to live lives that the innocent victims of this tragedy dreamt about but sadly will now never be able to fulfill."
Here's her message in its entirety. Warning: It's graphic, but powerful.
