It’s the brand most of us reach for when we want to treat someone to a little something special, but apparently we can’t even get the name right.
You’re not alone if you’ve been saying “God-EYE-vuh” all these years; we were all guilty of this, too. Apparently this isn’t another case of “care-uh-mel” versus “car-mel,” either. There is, in fact, a right way to say the 90-year-old Belgian brand’s name: “Go-DEE-vuh.” In fact, Belgium’s Prime Minister joked about learning about this unfamiliar thing called “God-EYE-vuh” at the chocolatier’s 90th anniversary celebration, according to Delish.
But, rest assured, no one’s laughing at you in the store if you stick with how you’ve been saying it all along. Brand representatives consider both pronunciations correct, although you’re likely to hear the “Go-DEE-vuh” in stores. Whew! But if you need an excuse to go buy some chocolates, you can always go practice your European pronunciation.
