Playing Monopoly with your family and hate losing? For many families, a good game of Monopoly is as much a part of the holiday and New Year season as eating too many cookies and watching the ball drop, but the problem is, there can only be one winner.
But don’t worry, this year, you can reign supreme as the Queen of Monopoly thanks to these expert tips and tricks from U.K. Monopoly champ Natalie Fitzsimons. Natalie, 26, a software developer from Northern Ireland, is not only the U.K.’s reigning Monopoly Champion but currently ranks sixth in the world, and she revealed her top 5 tips and tricks to Mirror.co.uk.
1. Jail isn’t always a bad thing.
In fact, when the game is in its final stages, Natalie recommends you don’t rush to get out of jail. She explains: “At the later stages of the game, it’s better to be behind bars so you can still collect but don’t land on expensive squares.”
2. Don’t buy hotels.
You might think hotels are a better buy than houses, or you might even think they’re both basically the same, but according to Natalie hotels aren’t worth the hassle.
3. Buy as many houses as possible.
Yes, instead of buying hotels, Natalie recommend you create a “housing shortage” by buying as many houses as you can (with your borrowed money) as quickly as possible. Sneaky!
4. Don’t be seduced by Park Lane.
Park Lane may be one of the most salubrious squares on the Monopoly board, but Natalie thinks it’s all hype. Quite simply, she explained: “It may be prestigious but Park Lane is actually the square in the game landed on less than any other.”
5. Borrow, borrow, borrow.
“As soon as you get a monopoly yourself, mortgage everything else and spend every penny on houses. A monopoly with three houses on each square is far more valuable with lots of low-rent single property squares. You can always ‘un-mortgage’ them later in the game.”
