Forget the soothing atmosphere and tranquility of being pampered. Imagine walking into a nail salon and being told you will be charged extra, simply for the way you look. It's a nightmare almost too terrible to believe, but for one Memphis nail salon, it's a shocking reality.
The establishment was spotted with a sign on the wall indicating that "overweight" women will incur additional fees for a pedicure. “Sorry," the sign reads, "but if you are overweight, pedicure will be $45 due to service fees for pedicurists."
The whole debacle was caught on camera by a customer named Deshania Ferguson, who shared the image to Facebook, outraged.
Soon, the photo began to gain traction, with friends and family voicing their concern--some even contacting their local news channel, WREG, to investigate the offensive salon. The salon owner denied that the sign had ever been posted in his business, however, he did admit that he doesn't serve "severely overweight" patrons due to the alleged physical strain it places on both technicians and expensive equipment.
Regardless, this exclusive policy is obviously so wrong. And while it may be 2017, it saddens us to see that discrimination like this still exists.
