Long before she became Marilyn Monroe--Hollywood movie star, sex symbol, fodder for gossip columnists everywhere--she was Norma Jean, a lonely housewife in Los Angeles yearning for fame.
In 1945 she got her big break when a local modeling agency signed her up. Her measurements, according to the New York Post, were a far cry from models today: “Size 12, height 5.6, 36 bust, 24 waist, 34 hips.” The agency gave her hair-and-makeup lessons, taught her to walk and pose, and got her gigs.
This photo is dated from those early days, before she broke into the movies. Of course she looks fantastic, but what we LOVE about this photo are her belly rolls. See?
Seems like the standards of perfection for women were pretty attainable in those days. Let's hope they come back soon!
