We love indulging in a sweet, bubbly sip at spring brunches, and now we can enjoy one guilt-free! The reason: Alcohol jumpstarts thermogenesis, a process that increases calorie burn by 14 percent for up to 90 minutes. What’s more, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that this heat-producing process – stimulated by a daily cocktail or two – can reduce the risk of weight gain by up to 30 percent.
Plus, enjoying an occasional cocktail can help keep you on your A-game. Researchers at the University of Texas found that alcohol promotes the generation of new cells in the brain region (the hippocampus) that governs memory and learning. This in turn staves off age-related brain shrinkage known to cause cognitive decline and dementia.
