You probably have one in your purse. You definitely have one in your house. But you likely never thought to look straight at it while you're eating. If you start now, though, you can reach your goal weight without feeling like you've changed your diet at all!
It turns out that keeping a mirror in front of you while you dine can help you make more waist-conscious food choices. A study out of the University of Central Florida found that participants who saw their reflection while eating chocolate cake didn't rate the dessert as highly as those participants who couldn't see themselves devouring the same cake. And yet there was no difference in a fruit salad's taste rating between participants who ate it while facing a mirror and those who didn't.
No one feels so hot after a hefty slice of cake, so as Ata Jami, the marketing professor behind the study, told The Washington Post, "They are looking for a reason for why they're not feeling so good, so they think, 'maybe there is something wrong with the food...' You don't want to see yourself eating unhealthy products because that does not match with standards of healthy eating."
Jami thinks that simply hanging a mirror in your kitchen can prompt you to choose, say, an apple instead of a bag of chips when you head in there for a snack. Now that's worth reflecting on in the New Year.
