Michael J. Fox’s Most Recent Role Is Surprisingly Sweet — And, Tasty!

Tags:

Michael J. Fox is known for his iconic roles in films like Back to the Future and his TV series Spin City. But more recently, he’s stepped into an entirely different job: recipe taste-tester.

Fox’s wife, Tracy Pollan, recently published a cookbook, along with her sisters, Dana and Lori, and her mother, Corky. Mostly Plants: 101 Delicious Flexitarian Recipes from the Pollan Family ($16.49, Amazon) is a compilation of the “flexitarian” recipes they have been cooking over the years.

A “flexitarian” or a “flexible vegetarian” is basically what it sounds like: a plant-based diet with the option for an occasional meat or fish dish. Pollan told the Wall Street Journal that she had been a vegetarian, but adopted this diet while pregnant with their twin daughters, Aquinnah and Schuyler, because she struggled to maintain healthy levels of iron and protein without eating meat. (The couple also have an older son, Sam, but she was able to remain meat-free during that pregnancy.)

The diet has also helped with Fox’s illness. “Everyone’s Parkinson’s disease is different, but it works well for him,” Pollan explained. She elaborated with the New York Post: “In all the research we did, we’ve seen that this diet isn’t just good for anyone, but for [also] anyone who has a lot of health challenges. It’s just intrinsically a healthier way to live.”

Fox himself isn’t shy when it comes to gushing over how much he enjoys the Pollan’s food. “This is what my life tastes like, and it tastes fantastic,” he revealed in a panel with his in-laws at the 92Y in New York. He was particularly excited that he got to taste everything when they tested it out for the cookbook. “It’s just the best deal in the world,” he said.

Fox also admitted that his food taste was on the opposite end of the spectrum before his wife came along. While listing the things he used to hate (“cucumber, cauliflower, beets…”), Tracy helpfully summed them up for everyone, “mostly plants!” Apparently, chicken was about all he could muster on his own. So, of course, the book includes plenty of chicken and other meat options for those not willing to go completely without animal products. Fox is a big fan of the chicken piccata with broccoli rice. Sounds pretty good to us, too!

Whether you’re looking to cut back on your own meat consumption, give it up entirely, or not, you’re sure to find plenty of recipe inspiration in Mostly Plants. It’s not only Fox who’s a fan of the dishes, either. One happy reviewer wrote, “I find the recipes extremely easy to follow and more importantly, these are actually things I’m excited to cook! The Pollans knocked it out of the park.” Check it out for yourself and dig in!
