One of the most legendary and outspoken first ladies was Eleanor Roosevelt, who actively fought for civil and women's rights. She held press conferences, hosted radio shows, wrote her own newspaper column, and was bold enough to openly disagree with some of her husband's policies. But most of all, she was admired for her humanitarian work — and because of her achievements, former U.S. President Harry Truman actually called her the "First Lady of the World." Talk about inspiring!
Another favorite of ours was none other than the fashionable Jackie Kennedy. Known for her restoration of the White House, the former first lady had a strong passion for arts and culture. But you know what's also intriguing? The fact that she almost married someone else before she met former President John F. Kennedy!
When Jackie was just 22, she was engaged to John Husted, a Yale graduate, World War II veteran and Wall Street banker. However, she started to have doubts and didn't like the idea of becoming a housewife, so she called the whole thing off in 1952. But get this — just a few months later, she started dating her future husband, John (who was a U.S. congressman at the time). We bet she never thought that she'd eventually become the first lady of the country!
