One of the most legendary and outspoken first ladies was Eleanor Roosevelt, who actively fought for civil and women's rights. She held press conferences, hosted radio shows, wrote her own newspaper column, and was bold enough to openly disagree with some of her husband's policies. But most of all, she was admired for her humanitarian work — and because of her achievements, former U.S. President Harry Truman actually called her the "First Lady of the World."
