As the saying goes, every dog has its day, but there's no question that Bretagne (pronounced Brittany) really deserves a special one.
Fourteen years ago, Bretagne and her mom/handler Denise Corliss, a member of Texas Task Force 1, arrived at the World Trade Center site and joined the nearly 100 other search-and-rescue dogs on their mission to find survivors. Corliss was stunned at the magnitude of the task, but when she looked down at her pup, she seemed stoic and ready to roll.
Bretagne is the only one from that crew of heroic dogs that's still alive. To celebrate her 16th birthday, and say a big thank you, the folks at Bark Box threw her a bash. They flew her and her parents to New York City, and gave her a limo ride.
Bretagne and her people were put her up at a luxe hotel overlooking Central Park in a room filled with treats, not to mention a delish burger dinner. Then it was off to the dog park near the Freedom Tower for a romp in the sprinklers. When the pooch returned to the hotel, she had a mountain of presents waiting for her, including a glamorous collar.
To top it all off, she got a birthday cake, which she loved.
As Corliss told Bark Box, "What I didn't anticipate is the role they take on as therapy dogs. They provide an opportunity for people to have support and comfort from a dog in a real difficult environment."
Thank you, Bretagne--may you have many more special days.
