If there’s one regret that I have in life, it’s the way I treated my hair during my youth. From cutting my own bangs as a child, to sizzling my wet hair with a straightener as a teen, to giving myself highlights as a young adult, my hair and I have been on quite a journey together. As I’ve gotten older and wiser (much wiser), I’ve learned how to properly care for my hair and, most importantly, my scalp.

One of my favorite ways to do this is with the Kristin Ess Instant Exfoliating Scalp Scrub ($14, Target). Formulated to remove build-up, gently exfoliate, and soothe the scalp, when I came across this scalp scrub I knew I was going to love it. Full transparency: I am a bit of a Kristin Ess devotee. Ever since her line at Target first debuted I’ve tried countless products with only positive results. So, you can say I went into testing out this product with a lot of high hopes — and thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.

Using this scalp scrub couldn’t be easier. Equipped with a pointed tip, I use it almost like a comb to separate my hair into sections at the root, and apply the jelly-like coconut scented scrub directly onto my scalp. Now fair warning — this stuff is thick. However, I really love the consistency as it helps it stay in place while you apply it to each section. After you’ve properly saturated your scalp, all that’s left to do is use your wet hands to give yourself a scalp massage. I love using it on wet hair before I shampoo and condition.

Now, as someone with curly hair who loves dry shampoo, I know a thing or two about about an itchy scalp. I swear, I’ve tried every scalp scrub on the market to no avail. Most have been salt-based, but the thing that really piqued my interest about this scrub is it uses sugar instead. Because salt is notoriously drying, I think it’s the main reason this scalp scrub has been the only one that has worked for me, leaving my scalp refreshed and hydrated.

But don’t just take it from me, Target reviewers are loving it too: “Honestly, this stuff has been a serious game changer for me!” on user exclaimed. “I get dry patches on certain areas of my scalp towards my hair line that drive me nuts. I’ve tried switching products up and nothing seemed to do the trick until I tried this. After one use I noticed a huge difference and can’t fathom how I lived without it in my routine!”

So, whether you’re someone who deals with a dry, sensitive scalp year-round, or someone whose found that their days spent in the sun, on the beach, or in the pool have left their scalp dry and in need of a little TLC, this scrub will be a game-changer. After all, everyone’s hair could use a little sugar every now and then, right?
