Cut Hot Flashes By 50 Percent With a Keto-Alkaline Diet

Tags:

Up to 45 percent of women experience hot flashes for up to five years after menopause, and for some, the symptoms can last more than 10 years. But in trials, combining a keto diet with a pH-balancing alkaline diet has been shown to reduce the number and severity of hot flashes by 50 percent in just two weeks.

And in a study of more than 6,000 women, researchers in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that those who ate a keto-alkaline diet were 20 percent less likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats than those who ate a diet higher in sugar and carbs.

That’s because the main hot-flash triggers are blood-sugar fluctuations (which increase insulin levels) and stress (which raises cortisol levels), explains Anna Cabeca, DO.

“Contrary to popular belief, insulin, and cortisol play a bigger role in triggering menopausal symptoms than estrogen, so unless we’re supporting the body’s ability to balance these hormones, we struggle with symptoms like hot flashes,” she says. “Keto and alkaline foods optimize insulin and cortisol, so you’ll naturally have fewer flashes on a keto-alkaline plan.”

Dr. Cabeca recommends starting with a 10-day keto-alkaline cleanse. The first five days of this are focused on eliminating acid-producing foods while loading up on alkalinizing minerals that neutralize the acids. This also helps to cleanse your thyroid and give it boost — which can also help you lose pesky pounds your menopause has also caused to pile up.
