When Kate Middleton shows up at the 2018 BAFTA Awards on February 18, all eyes will be on her outfit — and not because of her growing baby bump. Many of the actresses in attendance are expected to wear black in support of the #TimesUp movement, which begs the question: What will Kate wear?
Royal etiquette dictates that no member of the royal family may make political statements. (Members of the royal family do not vote in elections, for example.) If Kate were to wear a black gown — even if it were not in response to the #TimesUp movement — it could be seen as a breach of royal protocol. But not wearing a black gown would make Kate one of the few (if any) female guests to essentially opt out of endorsing the movement.
Kate Middleton will have to toe a fine line at this year's BAFTA awards, and we're certainly relieved to not be in her stylist's shoes.
Does the Duchess of Cambridge a) wear black to Bafta like #timesup campaigners and be accused of making political statement, or b) risk being the only woman wearing colour? Glad I'm not the one deciding https://t.co/unc7kMbLfn— Hannah Furness (@Hannah_Furness) February 9, 2018
It's possible — and likely, considering what Kate wore to last year's ceremony — that she'll find a way to work around the unofficial all-black dress code. Perhaps she'll wear something similar to the black off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown she donned in 2017; the McQueen design in question has bouquets of white flowers embroidered on it.

My guess on this is that Kate will wear a dress that is black with some coloured/metallic detail. That way she is unlikely to be accused of being too political or of ignoring the cause https://t.co/aWhsYPsJmU— Victoria Murphy (@QueenVicMirror) February 9, 2018
Kate Middleton and Prince William — along with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — are part of the younger generation of royals working to reinvent and do away with the public's old perceptions of the British monarchy. Though these young royals — Meghan especially — are more than happy to break away from old traditions, it's unlikely that Kate Middleton will pull some kind of publicity stunt at the BAFTAs. Kate Middleton's style is generally quite reserved and demure, so we're sure that no matter what she wears, she'll still look classy.
