Joanna Gaines’s Pre-Fame Engagement Ring Is WAY More Modest Than Other Celebs–and She’ll Never Upgrade It

Since they’re meant to express such a special sentiment, engagement rings can be a big deal to many women. But whether a ring is an expensive bauble or a piece of candy worth pennies, what’s important is the meaning behind it. Right?

Just ask HGTV star Joanna Gaines, who’s touching hearts everywhere after revealing that her husband (and Fixer Upper co-star) Chip Gaines recently made her an offer most women would love to get–as well as the startling reason she outright refused it.

Apparently, Chip thought that their anniversary was a good time to offer his wife of more than a decade a chance to upgrade the modest ring they picked out together when they were young and not famous (or rich).

He went to the trouble of finding the exact same jeweler who made the first ring, and the jeweler approached Joanna with a black velvet tray of dazzling diamonds and urged her to pick out something newer and better. But Joanna was having none of it.

“I looked him in the eye, and I said, ‘I’m sorry, but no. This is the original diamond I picked, and it’s perfect just the way it is,'” Joanna revealed in her new book, The Magnolia Book.

Wow! Who among us wouldn’t at least browse that tray of sparkly gems and imagine the possibilities? But she firmly stood her ground.

“It wasn’t a ‘perfect’ diamond,” Gaines added. “But it was perfect for me… To me, my ring is part of our story.”

Sounds like Chip’s wife is in it for the right reasons–and for the long haul!
