Jenna Bush Hager Shares New Photo of Daughter Mila on Her Birthday and Reveals ‘Humiliating’ Mom Moment

Mom Jenna Bush Hager‘s story about daughter Mila proves that stars really are just like us.

During a segment of the TODAY Show, the mother of two told co-host Kathie Lee Gifford that her 4-year-old daughter Mila had an embarrassing meltdown on her birthday while shoe shopping with her mom and grandmother, former First Lady Barbara Bush. Also along for the ride were several Secret Service agents. Yikes!

As Jenna shopped for her younger daughter, 1-year-old Poppy, Mila spotted a pink watch she just had to have. Mila, who had just finished her day at school, was on a “sugar high” after a birthday party at school; when mom said no to the watch, Mila “threw a huge fit.”

“It was so humiliating,” Jenna said. Knowing how mortifying it is when your child throws a tantrum in public, we truly sympathize with Jenna. Of course, the 35-year-old handled the situation with grace.

Instead of immediately giving in to her daughter so that she would stop crying, Jenna stood firmly behind her decision that she would not buy Mila the watch.

“Had she not thrown the fit, she probably would’ve gotten it. But you throw a fit, you don’t reward,” she said.”

Whether or not you agree with Jenna’s parenting, her decision, of course, did nothing to quiet Mila’s temper.

“We’re walking down the street, I’m carrying her scooter, she’s kicking, ‘I wanted that watch forever, you’re so mean,’” Jenna said. “And then the Secret Service are trailing, people are saying, ‘Oh, Laura Bush.’”

While we certainly don’t envy being in her position, we can’t help but chuckle a little bit at the idea of Jenna and former First Lady Barbara Bush trying to calm a 4-year-old while the Secret Service, maybe sheepishly, looks on.

But Jenna doesn’t regret her choice, telling Kathie Lee that, “You can’t give in.”

For her bad behavior, Mila got a timeout. And while that probably wasn’t the most fun place to be on her birthday, we have to applaud Jenna for sticking to her guns. That said, we do want to wish little Mila a very happy birthday. We hope she enjoyed the day!
