Jamie Lee Curtis Has Hilariously Simple Advice For a Long-Lasting Marriage

Tags:

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so we’re looking back at our favorite famous love stories. Jamie Lee Curtis and husband Christopher Guest have been married for 35 years — that’s impressive for anyone, but even more so for a couple in the entertainment industry. So, how do they keep things running smoothly after all these years?

Fans of Guest’s films won’t be surprised to learn there’s a hilarious piece of advice behind their long-lasting relationship. It was Curtis who revealed the trick while on TODAY in 2015: “Don’t get divorced.” Well, that seems simple enough! She elaborated saying, “It’s a fascinating thing. I could write a book on marriage called ‘Don’t Leave.’”

It’s worth noting that Curtis and Guest also seem to have fate on their side. In 1984, before they even met, the actress first spotted her future spouse while flipping through a copy of Rolling Stone that happened to feature Guest promoting his film, Spinal Tap. “I looked at the man on the right, wearing a plaid shirt and a waggish smirk. I’d never seen him before,” Curtis detailed in an essay she penned for Oprah, “but I pointed at him. ‘I’m going to marry that man,’ I said to my friend.”

Although we know she was right on the money, their romance didn’t have an immediate spark. Curtis contacted his agent to get in touch, but Guest didn’t return her call. However, they happened to cross paths at a restaurant not long after that. “He waved to me as if to say, ‘I’m the guy you called.’ I waved back: ‘I’m the woman who called you.’” Guest finally called her back the very next day, June 28, and they had their first date on July 2.

About a month into their relationship, Guest had to leave California for a yearlong stint on Saturday Night Live in New York. Curtis remembered a phone call between them that September, still just a few months into their romance, when Guest asked her, “Do you like diamonds?” The couple tied the knot on December 18, 1984, only five months after their first date.

“Chris and I have a wonderful, complicated, imperfect life,” Curtis wrote, “and a very real marriage. I’ll never know why I thought we’d understand each other when I saw his photograph. Hidden in that smirk, I think, was a little secret that only I knew.” They even still have that fateful photo hanging up in their home today, Guest admitted

We just love this couple’s amazing love story — and that they’ve been able to keep it going for so long. Here’s to even more years of wedded bliss for Curtis and Guest!
